The Hamilton Public Library provides an After School Homework Help Club at several locations throughout the City, including its Central Branch and the Terryberry Library. The Homework Help Club is becoming part of mainstream library services. The development of this important service is in response to community need. This service is free and open to everyone.
Strengthening Libraries to Build a Stronger Community
Why a Homework Help Club?
Education is the key to a child’s future. Completing homework helps students to be successful at school. Adolescents, in particular, often need help and encouragement to finish their homework. But in today's fast paced society and hectic lifestyles, help is not always available.
In 1992, the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development released a report documenting that the most dangerous time of the day for young people are the three hours after they leave school. This is that time when they are most susceptible to negative peer pressures and engaging in illegal activity. The Carnegie Group recommend that communities create support networks that include an after school program.
Homework Help Club helps students to be successful and provides opportunities for them to engage in positive proactive activities.
Working with Frontier College and SISO (Settlement and Integration Services Organization), the Hamilton Public Library developed the After School Homework Help Club.
This unique program helps students to be academically successful and contributes to a brighter future.
